Tribute Video Mapping to Painter August Rosell
On the occasion of the 75th birthday of painter August Rosell, Vilafranca del Penedès has paid an institutional and civic tribute to one of the most representative figures of local painting. The Vilafranca Town Council and the Department of Culture entrusted Sínoca with designing and executing a monumental audiovisual show on the façade of the Capella de Sant Joan on August 22 and 23 2026.
Projected during the lead-up events to the Festa Major, at the closing of the Novena and the Goigs de Sant Fèlix, the project transformed the local artist's career into a light and digital art show with high visual impact.
From Canvas to Stone: Fusions Between Painting and 3D Animation
This 7-minute architectural video mapping show merged historical heritage, painting, and technology. Far from a conventional projection, the intervention was conceived as a dialogue between the artwork and the urban space. Using 3D modeling, animation, and photography techniques of the paintings, the author's artwork was brought to life, interacting directly with the building's geometry.
The Creative Process: Bringing Pictorial Matter to Life
Based on a rigorous selection of Rosell's works, the conceptual challenge was to translate the brushstroke texture and characteristic light treatment of Rosell's paintings into the language of 3D animation and digital design.
The Capella de Sant Joan, a location closely linked to the painter through his history with the Firart art fair, became a living canvas. The façade's elements dialogued with the streets, squares, and Penedès landscapes immortalized by the artist over decades. During the projection, virtual lighting simulated sunlight hitting the stone, causing the reliefs to generate dynamic shadows in harmony with the still lifes, portraits, and landscapes.
Audiovisual Shows for Heritage Enhancement
This project highlights the potential of video mapping as a cultural dissemination tool for town councils and institutions. Digital art and monumental projection make it possible to commemorate milestones, anniversaries, and local festivals, turning heritage and collective memory into a large-format outdoor audiovisual show.
