The Legend of the Devil's Bridge in Video Mapping

27/04/2025
The Pont del Diable in Martorell, the municipality’s most emblematic heritage monument, became the stage for a video mapping show created for the 2025 Spring Fair. This project, developed by Sínoca, brings together audiovisual art, popular culture, and local legend in a proposal that blends tradition with a contemporary perspective. The intervention draws on the symbolic character of the bridge itself to build a staged experience that engages in dialogue with the space and its underlying imagery.

Reinterpreting the legend through video mapping, laser lighting, and music

The show is structured around three core concepts — goodness, evil, and cunning — which define the narrative and shape a visual reinterpretation of the legend. Through video mapping, laser lighting, and music, the story unfolds across the architecture, turning the bridge into a living narrative surface in constant transformation. The strength of the water, the darkness of the devil, and the wisdom of the old woman guide the progression of the story, while the cat acts as a tension-driving element, crossing the boundary between good and evil.
From a visual standpoint, the mapping content combines illustrations of characters and landscapes with an aesthetic inspired by printmaking, evoking a traditional visual imaginary, alongside 3D animation and contemporary visual effects. This contrast creates a dialogue between past and present, preserving the popular roots of the story while translating it into a contemporary visual language. The composition of the scenes, together with the use of light and color, builds a visual dramaturgy that alternates between moments of intensity and more subtle passages, giving rhythm to the show and enhancing narrative clarity.

A scenic space that expands beyond the bridge

One of the key aspects of the project was the expansion of the stage beyond the bridge itself, incorporating the surrounding garden as an active part of the performance. Through lighting coordinated with the mapping, a broader scenic space was created, redirecting the audience’s gaze and generating multiple focal points. This expansion added depth and a certain three-dimensional dimension to the overall experience, reinforcing the relationship between architecture, light, and storytelling.
Within this extended space, elements of traditional folk performance were integrated at specific moments, with the participation of devils, giants, and “big-heads” (capgrossos), appearing punctually and synchronized with the visual narrative. The combination of audiovisual projection and live performance created dynamic shifts in rhythm and strengthened the connection with tradition, incorporating recognizable cultural elements into a contemporary visual language.

Video mapping for festivals, fairs, and cultural events

This project illustrates how video mapping applied to festivals, fairs, and cultural events can activate heritage and transform it into a narrative space with its own identity, capable of connecting past and present through light, movement, and visual storytelling.
